The History of Pizza

Pizza did not originate in the country for which it now famous. Yes, Iike many people, I always thought that Pizza originated in Italy. The origin of the word pizza is debatable. It is Italian for ‘pie’ and may have come from Latin ‘pitch’ or Greek ‘pitta’. However, the history of pizza goes a long way. The roots for Pizza were originally laid by the Greeks who first baked large, round and flat breads which they covered with oils, herbs and cheese. The first major change in the pizza was the use of tomato as a topping. While it is difficult to pinpoint who invented the Pizza, it is generally accepted that modern pizza was first made by baker Raffaele Esposito of Naples. Legend has it that the most typical Pizza, Pizza Margherita, was invented in 1889 in honour of Queen Margherita. Around 1889, Queen Margherita, accompanied by her […]

Aperitivo time

If you read my blog on a regular basis I am sure that you noticed that I am deeply and madly in love with Italian food. My love affair with Italian food began approximately 15 years ago when I visited Italy for the first time. I have to be honest and admit that it was love at first sight! During my first visit I met a girl working at a restaurant and we immediately became friends. After three years of sending letters and sharing a lot of secrets she invited me to stay with her family. During this month long visit, I had the opportunity to learn the basics of Italian cuisine. We also got the opportunity to travel extensively and try a lot of different regional cuisines. The essence of Italian cooking is simplicity. The important thing is to use the freshest seasonal ingredients possible and then use basic […]

I like to think about Italy as the food capital of the world. Some might not agree (I think Italian are with me on this) but this does not change the fact that millions of people visit Italy year after year to satisfy their food needs. I have to admit that Italian food is something I am very passionate about so you might find this article a bit biased, I about this in advance. There are a number of reasons why Italian food is the best in my opinion. The first distinctive feature that best describes Italian food is quality: quality of the ingredients, quality of the production process and the quality of the food display. The food prepared is made with fresh and natural ingredients. This enhances both the taste and flavor of the food. Ingredients such as oil, mozzarella, vegetables and any other product are produced according to […]
